Romanul urmărește aventurile tânărului centurion Marcus Aquila, care pornește într-o călătorie periculoasă pentru a recupera vulturul dispărut al legiunii a noua, simbol al onoarei și curajului. Sutcliff creează o atmosferă autentică și plină de detalii istorice, personajele sale fiind bine conturate și credibile. Prin combinația de aventură, prietenie și mister, cartea reușește să mențină interesul cititorului de la început până la sfârșit. O lectură recomandată iubitorilor de ficțiune istorică.
