”Fear of Flying” este o carte surprinzatoare scrisa de o autoare americana cu origini europene, dintr-o familie traditionala de evrei plecati din Germania in perioada celui de al doilea razboi mondial. Scrisa in 1973 este foarte indrazneata prin abordarea unor teme legate de sexualitatea, intimitatea feminina si libertatea personala. Personajul principal este Isadora Wing, o scriitoare a carei viata personala complexa este descoperita prin o serie de incercari parcurse in procesul de descoperire si intelegere de sine i contextul constrangerilor impuse de familia traditionala din care provine si de societate.
Ritmul cartii este alert, tonul indraznet, plin de umor si introspectiv.
Protagonista descrie calatoria sa la Viena (leaganul psihanalizei) impreuna cu sotul sau psihanalist si o delegatie de specialisti in psihanaliza americani care urmeaza sa participe la un congres al acestora. Isadora se infiltreaza in acest eveniment in calitate de reporter si ... seria de evenimente reusesc sa aduca in prim plan temele centrale: identitatea feminina, sexualitatea si libertatea personala (dorintele si fricile femeilor). Cautarea libertatii o prinde pe Isadora Wang intre dorinta de stabilitate si nevoia de libertate (inclusiv sexuala) incercand sa-si descopere adevaratele valori si aspiratii intelegand fricile si depasind anxietatile limitative.
Cartea este apreciata nu numai pentru modul curajos de abordare a unor teme tabu, dar si pentru ritmul si umorul autoarei, o adevarata feminista.
