The procession that moves across Chaucer's pages is as vibrant and detailed as a mediaeval tapestry. The cast of characters, including Chaucer himself, consists of real individuals with human emotions and foibles. When you consider that Chaucer wrote in English at a period when Latin was the primary literary language throughout Western Europe, the grandeur of his achievement becomes even more impressive.
