Lost Horizon begins slowly, with the High Lama reaching out to Hugh as the rest of the gang explores the lamasery in search of an escape. What's the problem? Each of the four characters is confined by our first perceptions of them, never progressing beyond their one-dimensional setup. Most of them are unlikable.
Finally, after the philosophy has been revealed, it is time to take action and make decisions. It leads to an intriguing, but incomplete conclusion. Overall, Lost Horizon has a decent idea and some interesting issues, but it never gripped me the way it does for other people. My parents fell in love with the novel and read it often. I found it intriguing. There is potential, and parts and pieces are fascinating, but the story is largely a cerebral exercise, the philosophy unappealing when stripped down to its nihilistic core, and the characters shallow and mostly unpleasant.
