Tillich, Paul: - Paul Tillich (1886-1965), German-born Protestant theologian known for his theology of culture, his political theology, and a theological method of sociocultural analysis. Tillich received his Ph.D. from Breslau (1911) and licentiate in theology from Halle (1912). Tillich immigrated to America to escape the Nazi threat in 1933 and joined Reinhold Niebuhr at Union Theological Seminary. He retired in 1955, but quickly assumed a professorship at Harvard University. Tillich remained at Harvard until 1962, and then he accepted the Nuveen Chair of Theology at the University of Chicago's Divinity School. Paul Tillich was a prolific writer and one of the foremost theologians of his century. Among his many books are Theology of Culture, Dynamics of Faith, and the three volumes of Systematic Theology.
