Hartley studied the works of Cubist artists and thus developed his skills in painting, his talent was acknowledged by art promoter Alfred Stieglitz. In 1909 Hartley held his first solo exhibition, at Stieglitz's 291 art gallery, where he exhibited hispaintings until 1937.
