Cott interviewed Paul McCartney for Rolling Stone on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Buddy Holly's death, and he conducted a nine-hour interview with John Lennon three days before he died, which was originally published in Rolling Stone and later in the book Listening: Interviews, 1970-1989 (Minnesota, 2020).
