The Houston Mutiny and Riot of 1917, marks one of Houston's darkest hours in race relations. On August 23,1917, Acting First Sergeant Vida Henry led 156 armed soldiers toward Houston's Police Department by way of Brunner Avenue continuing along San Felipe Street.
