From The Forward by Matthew Meyer, Japanese yokai author and illustrator and founder of Yokai.com:

"One of the key aspects of folklore is that it doesn't belong to anybody; it belongs to everybody. Each storyteller builds upon those who came before them, picking the parts they like best and adding their own bits and pieces to the story. This collection of short stories continues that tradition, starting with the traditional roots of Japanese folklore and retelling them for a modern audience. DC and Michael McGannon draw upon the "folk" nature of folklore by taking familiar stories and making them their own. Their tales stay true to the nature of the ghosts and monsters of old Japan, while adding a bit of their own personality into the mix. Diehard fans of Japanese folklore will recognize the original folktales at the heart of each of these short stories.

DC and Michael McGannon's stories draw from and contribute to the ongoing resurgence of Japanese folklore. They are part of the shared tradition of storytelling which stretch from time immemorial and continues to this day."

An awesome (albeit short) collection of yokai tales, craftily written and illustrated by the Monster Guys. I loved most of the stories and the illustrations.Bizarre, very creepy (typical Japanese horror tales), gory (not a fan of gore, but I was ok with it here), and delightfully funny - dark humor at its best
"A Celebration of Vision" and "The Gathering" are more poetic/philosophical in nature and are also my favorites, along with "I've Lost my Head" (where a yokai literally loses its body and a bunch of floating heads attack a guy in a cursed forest). In "A Celebration..", a yokai whose body is covered with eyes helps a young thief see...a different perspective. "The Gathering" is told in the first person. The protagonist is confronted with the yokais of guilt (aka 100 blue lamps lit by demons and goblins who tell a true story...of a desperate woman who asked for help but was ignored and died in agony).
I also liked "Fields of Hate" quite a lot - I first thought the mud demon was a yokai who was simply upset about his land having been stolen. The identity of the Dorotabo and the story behind it is not what you would expect...
