Las 12 historias recopiladas en este volumen se publicaron entre 1891 y 1892 en The Strand Magazine. El propio autor los catalogó como sus relatos favoritos y constituyen la piedra angular del llamado canon holmesiano. Después de su publicación, el género ya no volvió a ser el mismo.
