Erwin Rommel is the best-known German field commander of WWII. Repeatedly decorated for valour during the First World War, he would go on to lead the German Panzer divisions in France and North Africa. To his British opponents - admirers of his apparent courage, chivalry and leadership - he became know by the sobriquet `Desert Fox'. His death, in October 1944, would give rise to speculation for generations to come on how history should judge him. To many he remains the ideal soldier, but as Reuth shows Rommel remained loyal to his Fuhrer until forced to commit suicide, and his fame was largely a creation of the master propagandist Joseph Goebbels. Stripping away the many lays of Nazi and Allied propaganda, Reuth argues that Rommel's life symbolises the German tragedy: to have followed Hitler into the abyss, and to have considered that to be his duty.

Rommel - cu subtitlul sugestiv - "the End of a Legend" (Sfarsitul unie Legende) - autorul continua munca altor scriitori - pt. ca despre Feldmaresalul Erwin Rommel sau scris zeci de mii de pagini si probabil se vor mai scrie alte zeci/sute de mii de pagini.
Daca va intrebati de ce? se acorda atata importanta unui maresal nazist din al doilea razboi mondial va recomand si aceasta carte (si altele) - si aici Ralf George Reuth descrie soldatul - care lupta fara ura ("Krieg Ohne Hass" - memoriile din Africa ale lui Erwin Rommel)- strategul - care a fost ridicat in slavi de catre ofiterii englezi pt. actiunile sale in luptele dn Africa de Nord , pe merit dar si cu multe exagerari, exagerari menite sa acopere propriile greseli tactice , exagerand pe alocuri relevanta actiunilor lui Rommel - dar fara a diminiua geniul strategic al acestuia.
Erwin Rommel - ramane in isotrie ca un mare geniu militar (care a luptat in "tabara gresita") apreciat (venerat?) de soldatii aflati sub comanda sa si in egala masura de inamicii pe campul de lupta. Si e important pt. noi sa stim ca Rommel este progenitura vremurilor lui si el nu poatea fi inteles decat in contextul acelor vremuri.
Cartea de fata, bine scrisa, bine documentata, merita citita de toti cei pasionati de istorie , o lectura placuta si captivanta (nu am dat punctaj maxim pt. ca mi-a lipsit elementul de noutate, toate aspectele prezentate in carte imi erau cunoscute deja, asta nu e vina autorului si nu scade valoarea cartii).
