On War: The Strategy of Military and Political Combat (Vom Kriege)

De (autor): Carl Von Clausewitz

On War is one of the most important treatises on political-military analysis and strategy ever written, and remains both controversial and influential on strategic thinking. It was written by Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz, after the Napoleonic wars, between 1816 and 1830. Clausewitz had set about revising his accumulated manuscripts, but did not live to finish the task. On War represents his theoretical explorations. Clausewitz analyzed the conflicts of his time along the line of the categories Purpose, Goal and Means. He reasoned that the Purpose of war is one's will to be enforced, which is determined by politics. The Goal of the conflict is therefore to defeat the opponent in order to exact the Purpose. The Goal is pursued with the help of a strategy that might be brought about by various Means such as by the defeat or the elimination of opposing armed forces or by non-military Means (such as propaganda, economic sanctions and political isolation). Thus, any resource of the human body and mind and all the moral and physical powers of a state might serve as Means to achieve the set goal.
In 'On War, ' Carl von Clausewitz presents a profound and analytical discourse on the nature, theory, and philosophy of warfare. Written in the early 19th century, Clausewitz's text combines historical examples with theoretical postulations, exploring concepts such as the relationship between war and politics, the unpredictable nature of conflict, and the fog of war. His literary style is characterized by dense introspection and a dialectical approach, inviting readers to engage with complex ideas that remain relevant in contemporary military and strategic studies. The work's comprehensive examination of the interplay between military strategy and social conditions reflects the burgeoning interest in systematic thought and rational analysis during the Enlightenment era. Clausewitz, a Prussian general and military theorist, drew from his extensive experience in the Napoleonic Wars to craft 'On War.' His first-hand encounters with the chaos and unpredictability of battle informed his philosophical explorations, revealing a mind deeply engaged with the ethical and psychological dimensions of military conflict. His interactions with other prominent military thinkers and historians also shaped his perspectives, positioning him as a pivotal figure in the study of military theory.
